Open is a film that has an odd set of characters. Each character in Open is doing things just for the sake of doing them, without any real purpose.

The characters are under the stringent control of their psychological conditioning and are in fact slaves to it.

Within the conflicts of the relationships there is a certain harmony which is maintaining the relationships; however, Tasha breaks that harmony with her influence over Jack.

The characters still controlled by their conditioning have no idea how to handle this break in harmony, and eventually give in to it against their will.

Self-awareness is absent in Open’s characters (except Tasha) and conditioning is prominent. The story attempts to excavate this lost self-awareness.
